Assessment Setup Checklist

Use this when creating a new assessment or course exam.

Before You Create

  • Define what you're testing — What should employees be able to do?
  • Set your passing score — Usually 80% (adjust if needed)
  • Decide: how many attempts? — Usually 2–3 attempts allowed
  • Set wait time between retakes — Usually 7 days
  • Gather test questions — Write or collect 10–20 questions

Creating the Assessment (5 Steps)

  • Step 1: Basic Information
    • Name (clear and specific)
    • Description (what it measures, when to take it)
    • Time limit (usually 20–60 minutes)
  • Step 2: Add Questions
    • Multiple choice (30–40%)
    • Scenario-based (40–50%)
    • Short answer or true/false (10–20%)
    • Mix easy and hard questions
  • Step 3: Set Scoring
    • Passing score (80% recommended)
    • Points per question (usually 1)
    • Penalty for wrong answers? (usually no)
  • Step 4: Configure Retakes
    • Attempts allowed (2–3)
    • Days between attempts (usually 7)
    • Show answers after submission? (Yes = helps learning)
  • Step 5: Link to Course
    • Select which course(s) use this assessment
    • Will it be required? (usually yes)
    • Position in course (usually at the end)

Testing & Publishing

  • Take it yourself — Are questions clear? Is timing reasonable?
  • Check difficulty — Not too easy (>95% passing) or too hard (<50% passing)
  • Test on mobile — Does it look good on phones?
  • Verify scoring — Does the system calculate correctly?
  • Review everything one more time
  • Test on a demo employee account
  • Notify managers: "New assessment coming"
  • Monitor results after launch
